POSIX.1 1988
This was the first official POSIX standard. In 1988, POSIX.1 defined the core components of a UNIX like operating system made up from an amalgam of the then current UNIX systems (UNIX Seventh Edition, UNIX System III, UNIX System V, 4.2BSD, and 4.3BSD).
The POSIX.1 standard limits itself to the base services (processes, files, I/O). Please see POSIX.2 for shell and utilities, POSIX.1b for realtime extensions, POSIX.1c for threads, and the ANSI C Library.
This work is also known as IEEE Std 1003.1-1988. (ANSI/IEEE Standard Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments).
Additionally, when POSIX.1 was adopted for use by the United States Federal Government, it became FIPS 151-1 (Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 151-1, POSIX: Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments).
